David's 1st Birthday

David did have a birthday, and we did have a very nice party for him. I've just been so swamped with moving house-sits & getting the school year underway that I haven't yet blogged on it! Although it took me till 9/9 to post this blog, I'll post-date it and pretend the party was yesterday (it occurred on Saturday the 30th).

We invited his birth parents, who were due for a visit anyway, and his birth mother invited her oldest sister (now both of her sisters know about and have met David, but her --and the birth father's -- parents are not in the know.

When they first arrived David was still napping. He had dozed in the car during an errand, and then refused to nap. That did stress me out, because in one of his birth parents' previous visits he had been woken from a nap, and proceeded to have a melt-down. It was super important to me that he not meltdown, since I wanted his birth parents to enjoy their visit. He finally started napping just 20 minutes before they were scheduled to arrive, so we let him sleep a little longer and chatted together. It was good to catch up on their lives a little bit.

We finally did wake him, and they played with him for a while while his birth aunt helped me frost the cake (thick & dark frosting, as per Taylor's request!). We sang and carried David's high chair outside, giving a big slice of chocolate cake and hoping to see him make a huge mess. But he was so tentative about the thing! He poked at it and clapped a lot, but took some encouragement from Taylor (a big spoonful of it) to get going. Nothing like Reese Baird, who (a few years back now) dug into his 1st birthday cake with relish and abandon, smearing it quickly over his belly and hands and face. Eventually David did get messy enough for Taylor to feel satisfied! That or else it was the bees bugging us that drove us to our next activity. I was not eager to learn how allergic David may be!

After cake we went for a short swim. David liked that, though the air had cooled down, so we didn't stay in the water for long. We ate a pizza dinner together and let him open presents. The wrapping paper was the most exciting thing. Taylor and I bought a very nice wooden toy for him, but his other gifts from Ma and Pop were used: eleven! Sandra Boyton books (I asked on the PAMP list for nicely used ones, and got 11!); a used Fisher Price race track (spirals down); and a used cow Halloween costume. He got a very cool truck from Grandma and Grandpa Halverson, and a pair of Soft Shoe boots from Tutu and Gumpa, as well as $1 (a tradition from my Henderson grandparents, and then my own parents, to receive a dollar for every year). David's birth aunt made him a little counting book with animal appliques, though some are coming loose and we'll have to figure out how to reattach. His birth parents bought him a really nice PBK wooden block set, and the lovely book Always, in which they wrote a beautiful note for him. They are tender-hearts and do love him, and I'm glad he'll have that record of their love.

He was royally spoiled with gifts and attention! The next day, what did he play with? The wood stove, getting into the ashes, and the unsteady, tipsy lamp in the living room. Sigh. I don't think we'll worry about buying our next child a single thing when they turn 1! Not because we will love him or her any less, but because we will know s/he only really wants the wrapping paper!

Finally messy!

Go Cardinal!

Last night Stanford played Oregon State (my dad's alma mater and the university in my hometown, Corvallis), so I jumped at the chance to buy some tickets. We overspent -- I realized later they weren't offered at any discount, and we paid for a 2nd child ticket, which we didn't use.

I don't actually follow football. Not at all. In high school I went to the games to go and hang out with the Band, where all my friends were playing, and dance! In college I had to work the gates because I was attempting to do crew (I gave that up by Winter Quarter!) and that was a fundraiser for us. I hated having drunk men breathe on me thinking they were hot. Ugh! But it was fun to be at the game with your whole freshman dorm. Eight guys painted the letters for STANFORD on their chests; one, very very pale, then had a permanent letter left in sunburn on his torso! I also remember Kausik arguing to me that year that football was a lot like ballet. Fooey!!

Anyway. I'm not sure why I didn't think to bring a book or something with me into this game! As a matter of fact, I wanted to bring grading, but Taylor thought that wouldn't be fun. But for me, just being there is fun -- the excitement, the people. But I just do not watch the game.

David enjoyed the noise and the movement. Taylor followed the game. Stanford won -- so I had a good evening!

(Grating) On My Mind: Twilight

Twilight (Twilight Series, Book 1) Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
Plot was fun, but if I have to hear Edward described as Adonis, or compared to a Greek god, or hear about his chiseled chest one more time, I'm going to puke!

I'm beginning _New Moon_ because I DO want to know what happens plot-wise. But the YA style descriptions are starting to grate on me.

One of my sisters knows a woman who is so smitten by Edward that she compares her husband to him. GIVE ME A BREAK! Where's the barf bag?

Crater Lake

We made the drive from Oregon to the Bay Area yesterday and today, leaving in the afternoon from Black Butte. We wanted to see Crater Lake, which Taylor (and David) had never seen, and which I hadn't visited since childhood. In the end, we didn't stop frequently -- our first stop we trudged up a lot of gravelly dirt, a bit hard in my boot-cast. After seeing the views, we drove a few hundred yards more -- and realized we could see the view with no hike! Oh well!

Uncle Bobby

My brother Bobby was such a wonderful help while David and I were in Oregon. For most of the time I was there, I could not yet carry David (because of the broken foot), so Bobby -- and my mom and dad -- got David out of bed, put him in the high chair, carried him here and there, and so forth.

At Grandma's 100th, Bobby took care of David nearly the entire time. I'm not sure who was the better chick magnet: David or Bobby. But the two of them had a bunch of girls with them the whole time!

There goes my plan of no sugar before he turns one!
Thanks for doing the baby duty anyway!

David: Cheesy Cute

Bobby: Cheesy Cute

We love you, Bobs. We're so proud of who you are!

Black Butte: Suttle Lake

Today we spent much of the day at Suttle Lake. With my foot, I couldn't water-ski. Still, it was fun to ride on Dad's boat, see Taylor's big grin as he rode the biscuit, laugh at Meta & Abby's shrieks as they rode it, canoe (something I can do!), and play in the sun & the water. I think my favorite part was watching David sit on the shore and stare across the water. I like seeing his "dreamy" side come out!

Fishing with Gumpa

My dad took the three oldest grandchildren -- Abby, Jack and Jimmy -- on a fishing trip.

He first spent an hour with them teaching them about their fishing poles, bait, etc.

They were so engrossed! How fun to get to fish with Gumpa!

We're ready, Gumpa!

Family Photos: The Informal Cut

Will somebody please Photoshop my head?!

Since Taylor had to set the timer and run for each posed shot, he actually took ten times more informal shots than posed.

Here are some of cute informal shots:

Lovely & Laughing with Catherine

Jack the Explorer

And some funny ones!

Can you all be just a little more excited about things?

Halleluja!

Can't...hold...longer

Oh my!

Trying to photograph the cousins.
