Tricks & Treats

Anna, Jim, and their boys came over last night for trick-or-treating in our neighborhood (a very family-friendly place for kids!). David was wearing his cousin Jimmy's fireman outfit -- it was 2 years too big for him, but I didn't want to buy a costume before David cares what he is! Next year I'll probably have to cave in to whatever superhero or ghoul he wants to be!

Anna and I took the boys out (it was freezing by the time we got home!), while Taylor and Jim played games and answered the door. Taylor revived a joke that he and my roommate Heidi Hyte came up with 7 years back: answering the door with "Oh, we're so sorry! We ran out of candy. Would you rather have potatoes or dried beans?" They laughed and laughed at the kids' startled, stunned reactions. One boy did run off with a yam though!

Then the boys came home and dug into their loot. Anna remembered how we'd bring home the goods and then sit and swap with each other to get our preferred candy. But we've confiscated David's candy -- one night of tooth decay is enough. Maybe he'll see some of it again when potty training begins (something we've decided to hold off on that till after the New Year, since our Israel tour means David will be away from Mom and Dad and thus likely to regress).
